Gartner: PC shipment declined in Q1; Asus and Apple increased shipments

The global PC market shipment has declined in the first quarter of the year, Gartner reports.

There is a 9.6% decrease versus the data reported last year.

Additionally, this is the first quarter that PC shipment dropped below 65 million since 2007.

Total shipment for the first quarter of 2016 totalled to 64.7 million only.

Meantime, the top five (5) vendors for the first quarter of the year are the familiar players. Topping the list is Lenovo having shipped more than 12 million units but compared to their last year’s figure it has declined by 7.2%. Lenovo’s 1Q2015 shipment recorded a 13M shipment. HP hit the second spot having 11.4M PC sold but suffering a 9% decrease versus the 1Q2015 figure of 12.5M units. Dell, on the other hand, endured only .4% decline having shipped 9.1M units this year.

Only Apple and Asus recorded an increase in this year’s report.

Asus, landing on the fourth spot has gained 1.5% increase having recorded a shipment of 5.3M already. Apple, on the other hand, had a 1% increase versus their last year’s figure.

IDC, on its report for the 1Q2016 had a similar estimated figures. IDC’s top five (5) PC vendor listed Lenovo, HP, Dell, Apple and Asus.

IDC also agrees that Lenovo, HP and Dell’s figure were down, but found Apple and Asus’ figures to be the same.

The decline of the PC sales is associated to the growing consumer of smartphones.

PCs are not being adopted in new households as they were in the past, especially in emerging markets. In these markets, smartphones are the priority. In the business segment, Gartner analysts said the Windows 10 refresh is expected to start toward the end of 2016. – Gartner

Gartner added that the downward trend of the PC market will recover at the end of the year when the market start to adopt Windows 10.

IDC has the same forecast that Windows 10 will help increase the PC sales figure.
